The Fickle Reader, or What The Hell Should I Read Next?!
I’ve got a ton of stuff that I should be reading… stuff for class, stuff like composition pedagogy and Greek philosophy and The Silmarillion, but I want something else. I want some brain candy, something that doesn’t require me to come at it armed with a highlighter and post-it notes. And of course, I can’t figure out what the hell I want to read.
I’m a moody reader anyway. I admire people who can organize their to-read stacks and actually follow a reading plan. I might intend to do that, but my mood always intrudes. I might intend to read Linnea Sinclair’s Gabriel’s Ghost, because I’d been looking for that book for ages and I finally have it, but once I start, I find that I’m just not in the mood for SF romance at the moment. I keep picking up China Miéville’s Perdido Street Station, but I can’t seem to get past the first chapter. I’m just not in the mood for it.
So what the heck should I read? At the moment, I’m thinking about picking up Glen Cook’s The Garrett Files. My boyfriend gave me a copy and insists that I read it, as it’s awesome and he wants to discuss it with me. We’ll see if this fickle fangirl can see it through.
