The spring semester starts on Tuesday, which means lots of reading for this fangirl, though not as much reading for pleasure as I’d like. Luckily, though, I’m taking really cool classes: Problems in Adolescent Literature and a course on J.K. Rowling.

Can I take a moment to express how much my department rocks? We have lots of creative writing classes, comics studies, Tolkien studies, an undergrad (unfortunately) class on science fiction, and Harry Potter classes taught by our resident medieval/Renaissance scholar. I love this program.

Anyway, for the Rowling class, we’ll obviously be reading the full Harry Potter series along with Quidditch Through The Ages, Magical Beasts and Where To Find Them, and The Tales of Beedle the Bard. For the Adolescent Lit class, we’re reading two theory books, Skellig by David Almond, Fade by Robert Cormier, The Planet of Junior Brown by Virginia Hamilton, Feed by M.T. Anderson, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, and Nation by Terry Pratchett. Most of those books have a decidedly spec-fic flavor, and I’m very excited to read them. I’ll be sure to post reviews as I read this semester.

I’m 2/3rds of the way through Anya Bast’s The Chosen Sin, and hooray, the plot is finally rolling! Of course, it’s not exactly a good thing if the plot doesn’t really pick up until halfway through the book, but at least it’s enjoyable now. Hopefully I will finish reading it this weekend and post the review before the semester starts.

She's now not using that degree to work as a project manager for a mobile app company. She reads voraciously, loves geeky movies and tv shows, reads comic books as long as she's not pissed off at Marvel, and when she's procrastinating, she enjoys playing video games.
