It’s bad when a bunch of geeks think you’re a lame-ass. But the execs at the Sci-Fi Channel have decided it’s time to change their branding, and the network will be called Syfy11syfylogo as of today.

But wait. It gets worse. No, seriously, it does.

A quote from the channel’s president: “‘When we tested this new name, the thing that we got back from our 18-to-34 techno-savvy crowd, which is quite a lot of our audience, is actually this is how you’d text it,’ Mr. Howe said. ‘It made us feel much cooler, much more cutting-edge, much more hip, which was kind of bang-on what we wanted to achieve communication-wise.’”

WHUT. That’s how someone would type it? Here’s how you know that the people running this channel are not science fiction fans: I’d text it “SF” because that’s short for Science Fiction. I wouldn’t text Syfy because that’s stupid. Also, that logo? Is ugly.

The network has been going down the toilet anyway; I mean, how in the flaming blue fuck does wrestling fit into science fiction? I predict that the Stargate and BSG spinoffs will peter out, and the only programming left on the channel will be crappy reality shows.

[sigh] I just wonder if their focus groups actually included people who, you know, watch the channel.

Makes you wonder if the people in the study even know anything about SciFi besides even have watched the SciFi channel as you mentioned. And besides what cutting one letter from the name going to do for texting? Come on, most interested in the genre won’t have agreed on SyFy! Ridiculous!
