Ah, the semester is finally over! I can read for pleasure! And write up reviews for the books I’d been sneaking between bouts of homework and grading! Look out for reviews for these books:
- Bone Crossed by Patricia Briggs
- Desire Unchained by Larissa Ione
- Curse the Dawn by Karen Chance
coming soon!
I’ve been plowing through a bunch of graphic novels lately, too. I finally finished reading Watchmen, I’ve been re-reading older Fables trade paperbacks and reading some new ones, too, and I read X-Men First Class: Mutants and Mayhem last night. It’s funny… I think that X-Men First Class just might be one of the best X-books out right now. Mind you, I haven’t been keeping up with the newest issues, but from what I’ve read, it’s funny and clever, and the art is usually very good. I’m going to have to get my hands on some more collections.
In book-books, I’m currently reading New Blood by Gail Dayton, and wow. This book has completely sucked me in. I think the characters are fascinating, and though I’m not very far in, I’m really digging the intricately built plot and world. But you know me, I’m a sucker for good worldbuilding. :D I’ve got a ton of science fiction books in the pipeline, too. I’m taking a class on hard science fiction, specifically astronomy in SF, in the fall, so I’m going to try to get ahead in the reading. It’s been a long time since I’ve read any hard SF, so I’m definitely looking forward to it.
So tell me, what are you reading right now? Good, bad, indifferent? What’s next in your TBR pile?

- didn't like it

Reading: “Mansfield Park”, “The Gospel According to Superheroes” and on my TPB want to read list: “The Authority: Relentless” and “Y: The Last Man, volume 2″. I feel inundated with books, especially since I never liked Austin but feel like I should give her another shot.
I just finished Night by Elie Wiesel, and before that I read Dawn by him — two very intense books. I decompressed by reading Warren Ellis Crooked Little Vein, which was total fluff, but highly entertaining. I’m between books at the moment, though…Need to make a trip to the bookstore!
Claire, I love Austen, but I’ve never read Mansfield Park. My favorite is Pride & Prejudice. I absolutely adore Elizabeth Bennet, and Mr. Darcy… oh, be still my heart! :D
I read Night in… junior high, I think, when we were doing a unit on the Holocaust, but I don’t remember much about it. I’ll have to re-read that one of these days. I’ll probably head to the bookstore tomorrow, but it’s not like I need to, heh. I’ll have to post photos of my bookcases one of these days; they’re overflowing with books, most of which I haven’t read yet.
Currently I’m reading Moon Called in the Preying for Mercy omnibus that I got from the Book of the Month club. :) I’m listening to Duma Key because it’s been far too long since I read any Stephen King. I also just got in two books from the library system: Garfield Minus Garfield and Disney Lost and Found.
The Disney Lost and Found is the one I’m most looking forward to. It looks fascinating. It is a glimpse at Disney films that might have been but were scrapped for one reason or another. I can’t wait to delve into that one.
Currently really liking the Patricia Briggs and I’m pleasantly surprised about that. I wasn’t sure whether I was going to.
I’m glad to hear you’re digging Patricia Briggs, Renee! I think she’s a fantastic writer, and I love her style. That Disney book does sound interesting; I might have to try to hunt that one down myself, out of curiosity as to what they scrapped.
I just finished reading the latest Trek novel, Full Circle, which was a “Let’s go back and tie up a few loose ends and fill in some huge plot holes in the previous Voyager novels” novel. I was also able to get my hands on the first four of Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files novels at 75% off and have been devouring those as time permits; I’m about 3/4ths through the second book and wishing that Sci-Fi didn’t cancel the TV show based on these books, because seriously. They’re awesome.
I’ve been eyeballing the Dresden Files for aaages, but I just haven’t picked them up yet. You’d recommend them, Marron?
Woo hoo! The semester is OVER. Done. Can’t do anymore with it. I don’t do much reading for enjoyment. Instead, I listen to books for pleasure, and WOW! I’ve found a great one. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. But, that comes on the heels of listening to 4 days of the Kansas Evolution Hearings. Maybe anything would be good. Kidding. Dragon Tattoo is the best thing I’ve listened to since . . . since . . . since . . . Pratchett (Hat Full of Sky). That was 2 weeks ago.
Hey, Crazy Professor! Great to see you over here! :D The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, eh? I just looked it up on Amazon, and it looks really fascinating! You’ll have to let me know what you think of it when you finish listening.
Hey! I’m reading Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan. I started reading Club Dead by Charlaine Harris, but got sidetracked by the one I’m reading now. I want to try to finish the Southern Vampires series before the next season of True Blood starts.
Welcome to the land of leisure reading, m’dear! You’ve been sorely missed, indeed.
Me, I’m glomming Alyssa Day’s Warriors of Poseidon series (I shamelessly bumped them up the TBR mountain range, heh)
I’m currently reading The Magicians and Mrs. Quent, which you might like as well if you like worldbuilding. As for Gail Dayton, I LOVED her Rose series. If you haven’t read that already, you should add that to your pile.
Amanda, would you believe that I still haven’t picked up any of the Sookie novels? I dunno why, everyone seems to recommend them highly, but I just haven’t had the urge to read them. Hrm.
Hi, azteclady! I’ve missed posting on here, too. And reading for fun? Ahh.
Thanks for the rec, emisi! I haven’t read any Gail Dayton before now, but I adore her writing style!
I’d definitely recommend the Dresden Files books. They’re a lot of fun. They’re told from Dresden’s point of view, and he definitely has a dark-yet-amusing sense of humor. The stories are good, too. =)
