New space western from Fox… that’s not Firefly.

Fox makes Mal unhappy.

Fox makes Mal unhappy.

Once again, Fox is making a decision that will piss off nerds everywhere. We all know about their habit of cancelling really awesome shows. And now, we’re getting word that they’re planning on making a space western!

Unfortunately, said space western is not Firefly.

Way to go, Fox. Considering the very active fanbase that Firefly still has, even seven years after the show was cancelled, you’d think it would make sense that they’d want to tap into that giant barrel o’ fan cash. They could bring back Captain Tightpants and his merry band of space pirates and give us Browncoats more than just comic books and repeated DVD viewings to satisfy our love. They could pump out more merchandise that I sure as hell would buy. But no, they’re going for some other version of cowboys in space that will probably be ridiculous and contrived and will crash and burn post haste.

Or it’ll be really good, but Fox will cancel it anyway, because that’s what they do.

[sigh] I don’t know why I hoped for anything different.

Or the original premise will be great then the Fox execs will “suggest creative changes” that will ruin the show.

  • Rachel

However, hell will freeze over before they cancel one of their awful reality series. All of the cool character based series are now on cable, I’m afraid.

  • sandchigger

@Rachel Not necessarily, plenty of “reality” shows have been canceled due to shitty ratings. The thing is, it costs a LOT more money to make an actual television show when compared to reality and game shows. So long as advertisers are willing to pay them for their time, they’ll continue making horrible horrible reality/game shows.

  • @sandchigger: They do have a habit of doing that, don’t they? You’d hope that studio execs would have enough sense to see what will work and what won’t, but that’s asking entirely too much.

@Rachel: Yep. Like sandchigger said, it’s so much cheaper to make reality shows: no writers, no scripts, very little in the way of production costs. So unfortunately, we’re stuck with that crap because advertisers will pay for it and because studios will save a few bucks. Alas! But yes, there are a lot of great shows on cable right now. USA is doing very well. Almost makes me want to get cable. :D

@TDF Pamela: I’ve considered dropping cable, actually. I don’t watch live TV shows nor do I watch sports (ever… of any kind… bleh!) and since 99% of the television I watch is time shifted anyway I could easily just shift my viewing to online-only via sites like hulu.com, syfy.com and adultswim.com. Of course if I wanted to watch shows anywhere outside the computer room I’d have to either move the PC or get a second (or third or fourth or whatever) computer, but it’s still doable

@sandchigger Oh, I know! My husband was a PA on that reality series with Mark Cuban they filmed in Dallas a few years ago. I’m just bemoaning the facts. I’m an actor myself, so I have a vested interest watching things that involve my craft. Believe me, it’s too expensive to go to the theater and see a play live! : )

  • @sandchigger: You could always get a Mac Mini or something similar, hook it up to your TV, and watch hulu or Netflix from the comfort of your couch. That’s what we do. My friends think it’s awesome, because we have the biggest damn monitor EVER, and we can all watch silly cat videos on YouTube on it. :D

  • sandchigger

@TDF Pamela: Yeah, but eww… Mac… :P I’d sooner do the same with a small form factor PC.

  • @sandchigger: Whatever works. ;) I’m not a big fan of Macs, but the Fanboyfriend is slowly making a dent. Well, the problems I’ve been having with Windows lately have been helping, too.

  • stupid and annoying, i love firefly.
