It’s bright and early on January 1st and it’s time to make those New Year’s resolutions! Sure, everyone’s making resolutions to lose weight, get in shape, get their finances in order, whatever. Here at TDF though, we don’t do conventional so I’m going to make a list of geeky resolutions for 2010.
- I’m going to watch all of the new Battlestar Galactica this year. I know I’m way behind with BSG, but I can explain. I loved the original Battlestar Galactica as a kid. When I heard they were remaking it and that Starbuck would be a woman, that turned me right off. How could they mess with the campy glory that was Glen A. Larson’s original vision? (Okay, there was Galactica 1980 with the super strong kids and that was crap…) But now that it’s all over and people have raved about it for years, I’m finally prepared to dive in. I initially wanted to get them done in time to see Caprica in real time, but there’s no way I can be done by January 22nd, so I’m going to proceed apace and DVR Caprica for when I’m done. But I reserve the right to keep believing that Dirk Benedict is the only true Starbuck.
- I’m giving up on the core X-Men titles. It pains me to do it, but it’s been a long time in coming. I just haven’t been interested in a while, but I’ve been collecting them because…well, I’ve been collecting them. I have issues of Uncanny that I bought as a teenager going all the way back to issue #195. And I’m a completist at heart so it pains me to drop them while they’re still being cranked out, but I just can’t justify spending my hard-earned money on crap that doesn’t even interest me anymore. If this goes well and I don’t suffer too much withdrawal, I may start dropping Wolverine titles, too. We’ll see how it goes.
- I’m going to watch season 1 of Buffy: the Vampire Slayer some time this year. I know, it’s almost unheard of for a geek to not have seen Buffy. It never interested me when it was on until Oz became a main part of the cast, and even then, I’ve seen maybe two episodes, both Oz-centric. Yes, for a pop culture sponge I have some surprising gaps. Like I’ve never seen any of the Alien movies. And I have absolutely no plans to, either. Just like I have no plans to see any George Romero movies. You couldn’t pay me to see them. I will watch Buffy though, and probably like it since I loved Firefly. Whether I’ll continue past season one depends on how much I like it.
- I’m going to reread Lone Wolf & Cub, all 28 books. It’s over 7,000 pages and a masterpiece of not just manga, but literature. This is the easiest resolution to make, by far. I can’t wait to finish my current books so I can get stuck in!
- I’m going to write more articles for TDF. I’ve been pretty lax, but I’m going to work hard to bring you guys interesting articles on a variety of topics in 2010. Anyone for quantum physics? :D
WereGeek
WereGeek is reading 5-7 books at any given time, not including comics. These can range from alternative universe fiction to historical fact and from theoretical physics to Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader. You can argue with her all you want, but Dirk Benedict will always be her Starbuck. Her ringtone is the theme from Airwolf and she believes that there's nothing that can't be improved by the judicious application of werewolves. Or bacon. Or werewolves with bacon. She can be contacted at werewolf17 @ gmail.com and followed on Twitter at the link below.

My Buffy watching is also severely lacking. I’ve watched bits and pieces, but I was never really into it back when it aired. The thing is, I don’t know if I really want to watch it, haha.
I’ve been giving up X-Men titles, too. About the only ones I keep up with now are X-Men Forever (because it’s cracktacular) and X-Force, if I remember. And the First Class titles. And occasionally Wolverine. I like Marjorie M. Liu’s writing on Dark Wolverine, but I’m behind on that one. I think it’s about time Marvel got a new editor in chief.
To be honest, I’m not sure I want to watch Buffy either, but I feel it’s one of those holes I need to fill in. At least I’m only committing to the first season so it’s not a year-long slog if I just can’t get into it. :)
