A little bit of a departure now in this week’s Comedians You Should Know. Rather than a stand-up or comedy actor, this guy’s a musical comedian whose comedy is generally set to music. Unlike Bill Bailey, who uses music to enhance his stand-up, Tim Minchin‘s music is his act. He’s also Australian, though he spends a lot of time in the UK, so there’s another thing that makes him different from the other featured comedians thus far. And one further departure this week – I normally get a hint here or a suggestion there for clips and whatnot from my able British assistant Lady T (who wishes it known that she is a non-ginger and therefore can’t call him ginger), but when I asked for Tim Minchin clips she threw herself into the task wholeheartedly and pretty much wrote this whole feature. All that’s left to me is to arrange it in some semblance of order. So thank you, Lady T. I am indebted.

Tim Minchin, from Telegraph.co.uk

Tim Minchin has made a career of subversive songs with interesting twists. Not M. Night Shyamalan twists, I said interesting twists. Take his song “Prejudice”, for example. You think it’s going one way but then…I may have said too much. Just watch (adult language and concept warnings apply for all videos – just in case):

That kind of twist is pretty typical of Minchin. And now you see why Lady T was so up front about not being ginger. For those who haven’t encountered “ginger” in this context, a ginger is a red-headed person. Think any Weasley from “Harry Potter”, Amy Pond from the new “Doctor Who” or…Carrot Top. And, as Minchin demonstrates, ginger is often a term of abuse.  Remember, only a ginger can call another ginger “ginger”.

This next song is called “If I Didn’t Have You”. It’s a very Minchin-esque (if it’s not a word, it should be and if it’s not apparent by now, it will be) love song. It also showcases not only his bare feet (which he started doing to overcome stage fright by making him think he was playing in his living room) and his guyliner, but his really pretty eyes. It’s not just me saying that, many people (especially men) have remarked on how pretty his eyes are. Anyway, here’s “If I Didn’t Have You”:

In this next clip, Minchin goes on to explain that last song, the one I just told you was his idea of a love song, isn’t actually about love after all! See? He’s even messing with my feature! (Particularly strong warnings for this video, but if you skip it, you are so missing out!)

It’s well known (by those who know of him) that Tim Minchin is an atheist and skeptic. Here he is, turning his verbal skills to the argument of evolution vs. creation. His now-iconic character of Tony the Fish features prominently and the clip ends with a short little ditty called “If You Open Your Mind Too Much Your Brain Will Fall Out (Take My Wife!)”.

Believe it or not, this next clip actually aired on Australian broadcast TV! It’s funny, but may cross the line for some people. Don’t let the fact that it aired on the ABC (Australian Broadcasting Company) lull you into a false sense of security. Lady T said this was actually the cleanest version she could find, as it gets downright raunchy live in concert! Of course, now that I’ve talked up how NSFW it is, you just have to watch it, don’t you?

The next two clips show he’s not averse to serenading men with his subversive love songs. The first clip shows another upcoming Comedian You Should Know in Adam Hills (don’t you love how these all tie in together?) from an Australian show called “Spicks and Specks”. And no, that word does not have the same connotation in Australia as it does in the US:

This one is my favorite Minchin song but it requires a bit of an explanation for the uninitiated. He performed this song on “Friday Night With Jonathan Ross”, where the house band was called “4 Poofs and a Piano” because…well, they were three flamboyantly gay men who sang and one who played piano and sang. Truth in advertising, see? 50 Cent was supposed to be on the show that night, which is why he’s mentioned. Jamie Cullum also appeared and performed on the show. One last note: Jonathan Ross has a speech impediment where he pronounces Rs like Ws (rather unfortunate for someone whose name begins with an R) which has led to him being (semi-)affectionately nicknamed “Wossy”, as you’ll hear.

If all this has whetted your appetite and you live in the US, I’m afraid the only Tim Minchin stuff on offer are MP3 versions of the songs on “Ready For This?”. The only DVDs I’ve seen for sale are either Region 2 (Europe) or Region 4 (Australia). So if you don’t have a region-free DVD player, you’re out of luck. Good thing he has a respectable presence on YouTube and even has his own channel.

  • Video: Inflatable You – My second favorite song after “5 Poofs”, though it’s very, very wrong. :D

Thank you!! I’ve been reading these every week and enjoying them, though I knew everyone you’ve mentioned so far. Today you introduced me to someone new and FANTASTIC. I LOVE him! The songs are great and he does have some seriously amazing eyes! Thank you so much for introducing me! Can’t wait to get some of his stuff on CD. :)

  • WereGeek

I’m so glad I was able to introduce you to someone new! Even better, I’m glad you’ve been enjoying this series, both the familiar and unknown. I hope you’ll keep returning and discover some new favorites in the coming weeks and months. :)

    Hi,

Ignorant Australian here… One who is now really interested in what connotations spicks and specks might carry outside Australia (I’m so ignorant in fact that I’m not even sure which word you might be referring to?) Love that someone outside the country is appreciating Tim, he deserves it!

  • WereGeek

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spic I don’t *think* it’s as bad as the “n-word”, but it’s still pretty bad. Bad enough that when I saw the name of the program, I had a sharp intake of breath. ;P I haven’t heard it used for probably close to 20 years in my part of the US (Colorado), but I think it’s probably still in use on both coasts, though I’m not sure.

What connotation does “spicks and specks” have in Australia? Is it kind of like “this and that”?

(random note: the spell check on this computer is apparently racist. I got the squiggly red underline on “spicks” and the top substitution was “spics”. …I feel bad just typing that, even in a teaching moment :”> )

  • redblueskies

Here it pretty much means ‘this and that’, though I think the connotation is more: ‘a little bit of this and a little bit of that’. No racist overtones at all, in fact it has a sort of, I don’t know, normal/innocent/old fashioned sound to it? Rather the way ‘bibs and bobs’ sounds. (And boy do I hope that one doesn’t have any unknown overtones…)

Thanks for answering the question. I’m assuming I didn’t get an answer when I searched due to the spelling difference.

It was lovely seeing something Aussie recommended :)

(And I fully understand the bad feeling when typing. I get the same feeling whenever I have to write something that just feels wrong in my bones.)

  • WereGeek

To my knowledge, “bibs and bobs” has no untoward connotation here in the States. ;)

Speaking of Aussies, as I mentioned, Adam Hills will be featured soon. I only know him from what I’ve seen on UK TV, but I’m sure he’s got lots of good stuff up on YouTube, too. And please, if you have other Aussies (or anyone else) who you think should be featured, let me know! I will entertain all suggestions, so long as they have enough stuff on YT that I can share. Be aware though that I have a good 4-5 months already planned out, so it might be a while. :D

[...] you can plainly see, Catherine Tate has very red hair. Do you remember in Tim Minchin’s CYSK how he sang about the hatred felt towards “gingers”? Naturally, you would expect Tate [...]

Spicks and specks is to do with the Beach Boys song they realized years ago. Adam Hills even said in one episode that they didn’t really know why they chose it but it just sounded cool. The opening sequence is the actual beach boys song Spixks and Specks remixed by Paul Mac :)

Also Tim Minchin is a God!!

Adam Hills has some amazing stories

    Other Aussie comedians
    The Axies of Awesome
The Umbilical Beothers (these guys are amazingly brilliant)
    Josh Thomas
    Carl Barron

Not sure if you have covered these guys yet but will deff be reading some more articles now

  • WereGeek

That’s a Beach Boys song? I’m a HUGE Beach Boys fan from way back and I don’t remember anything about “spicks and specks”. (Not that I don’t believe you, I’ve just never heard of it.)

I’m currently working on Adam Hills for my next CYSK. And Axis of Awesome is on my list, too! I’ll have to check out the other guys you mentioned. Thanks for the suggestions!

  • Beasty_chicken

    Bah… I apologize – it was the Bee Gee’s

They both sing in folcetto so easily mixed up haha

I’m a massive Adam Hills fan ( and spicks and specks)

But an even bigger Tim MINCHIN fan. I idolize him and make all my friends watch his DVDs and convert them to MINCHIN-ology :) haha

  • WereGeek

Okay, I feel better now. My knowledge of the Bee Gees back catalog isn’t nearly as comprehensive as my Beach Boys knowledge. :)

And TDF correspondent Lady T was the one who turned me on to Tim Minchin. She was also very evangelical about it. :D

  • Beasty_chicken

I guess he kind of makes you feel like that!!

He has made me boarderline obsessive! :P

Get to see him in Melbourne on 25th of feb 3rd row tickets with my girlfriend

We both feel like little school girls :P

Annnnnnd, I have to thank you again for introducing me to Tim!  Last Thursday we had the chance to go see him live in Atlanta and it was so so so so so good.  He is absolutely adorable.  I just want to hug him.  His new songs were fantastic and the old familiar ones made me laugh again.  He also performed Hallelujah and it was gorgeous!  So, you’re the one that introduced me to this marvelous comedian I just wanted to thank you again.  :D

I have mixed feelings…on the one hand, I’m so glad you got to see Tim live in concert, but on the other hand, OMGJELUS! He isn’t coming anywhere near me, so I may never get to see him live. :(
