In the wake of Indiana passing a discriminatory law that would allow companies to exert their “religious freedom” against LGTBQ+ individuals (and, presumably, anyone else their religion deems unsavory), Gen Con owner and CEO, Adrian Swartout sent a message to attendees reassuring them that they are welcome and that other businesses in the Indianapolis area appreciate their patronage. She had issued a letter prior to SB 101’s passing that urged Governor Pence to veto the bill and that its passing could have negative consequences for the state’s economy in the future. Gen Con brings in an estimated $50 million annually to the state and has been held in Indianapolis since 2003.

John Marcotte, founder of Heroic Girls, gave a TED Talk about empowering girls to be their own heroes in life and that superheroes aren’t just for boys. He cites recent studies that have shown toys marketed to young girls have a negative effect on their imaginations and self-confidence, and demonstrates just how hugely gendered toys are in the United States. Not only does this have an extreme effect on little girls, but it also negatively impacts young boys by telling them that there is something wrong with being a girl and thus, limiting their empathy later in life.
